AMD to Acquire World Labs for $8.2 Billion

AMD will acquire World Labs, a developer of deep learning models founded by Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion. Founded in 2024, World Labs aims to enhance AI development through close collaboration across model research, systems, and compute. Fei-Fei Li, who is also AMD's executive vice president and chief scientist, highlighted the need to accelerate AI's future, stating, "Now that we have tangible proof of the possibilities, we want to do everything we can to accelerate the future."

This acquisition follows a partnership formed last year between AMD and World Labs focused on inference optimization and training. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year, pending regulatory approval. World Labs' first product, Marble, aims to leverage synthetic data from world models, which are considered essential for advancing AI applications, particularly in sectors like autonomous driving, as noted in discussions around companies like Tesla and Figure.

Fei-Fei Li is well-known for her work on ImageNet, a pivotal dataset in the field of computer vision. The acquisition is positioned to bolster AMD's AI capabilities significantly, aligning with its strategic focus on deep learning technologies.
