Karandeep Anand Becomes Disney's CTO After Leading Controversial AI Startup

Karandeep Anand has been appointed as Disney's first Chief Technology Officer, a notable transition following his tenure as CEO of Character.AI, which he led from May 2025 until his recent appointment. Disney sent a cease and desist letter to Character.AI in September 2025, accusing the startup of infringing on its copyrighted characters. This controversy arose despite Character.AI's focus on enabling users to create unique virtual characters and interact with them using generative AI.

Anand's career spans over 15 years at Microsoft and a six-year stint at Facebook from 2015 to 2021, where he gained significant experience in technology leadership. His selection for the CTO role was made by Disney's new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, who took over after Bob Iger stepped down in March 2026. Anand's dual role as a leader in AI and his previous connection with a company that faced legal challenges from Disney highlights the evolving dynamics within the entertainment and technology sectors.
