NVIDIA and Partners Invest $400M in AI Data Center Development in Egypt

NVIDIA and its partners have announced a $400 million investment to develop AI data centers in Egypt, licensed to operate by Hassan Allam Data Centers. This initiative aims to bolster the AI ecosystem in the region, with significant contributions from Hassan Allam Utilities and A15.

The investment follows a notable increase in NVIDIA's Deep Learning Institute learner base, which grew more than tenfold in the past year, bringing the total number of trained developers in Africa to over 85,000. NVIDIA aims to train 100,000 developers by 2024, with Nigeria being its second-largest global market.

Four AI factories have been announced or brought online across Africa within the past year, with a combined new capacity of 656 megawatts. The demand for data centers in Africa is currently around 0.4 gigawatts, projected to rise to between 1.5 and 2.2 gigawatts by 2030. The estimated construction cost for these data centers across the continent is between $10 to $20 billion.

Key players in this initiative include Cassava Technologies, which has a potential investment of up to $720 million, and Vodafone Egypt, a partner in the AI factory initiative. Other notable contributors are Stratos Lab, ECOBLOX, and Digital Parks Africa, collaborating on AI cloud projects.

This investment marks a critical step in enabling local AI development, reducing reliance on cloud-based compute resources hosted outside Africa. Ahmed Mostafa, NVIDIA's Regional AI Adoption Lead, emphasized the importance of accelerating every layer of AI infrastructure to support local developers and businesses.
