OpenAI Establishes Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI

On September 21, 2026, OpenAI announced the formation of the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). This group comprises prominent mathematicians including François Charles (ENS-PSL), Camillo De Lellis (IAS, GSSI), Timothy Gowers (Collège de France, Cambridge), Martin Hairer (EPFL, Imperial College London), Nikhil Srivastava (Berkeley, Simons Institute), Ulrike Tillmann (Oxford, INI), Ravi Vakil (Stanford), Edward Witten (IAS), and Melanie Matchett Wood (Harvard).

The Advisory Group's current task involves advising OpenAI on the release of significant mathematical results, following reports that OpenAI's internal model has solved over 100 long-standing open problems. The group has stated, "We believe that we are at a historic moment for our discipline," and plans to publish recommendations for AI companies on their website. However, OpenAI clarified that the group will not advise on the pacing of internal progress in mathematics. This initiative follows OpenAI's previous efforts to engage with the mathematical community, as seen in the formation of an independent advisory group earlier this month.
